Goethe B1 exam

The Goethe-Zertifikat B1 is the most commonly required German language certificate for visas, Ausbildung, and employment in Germany. Here's everything you need to know to pass it on your first try.
Exam format overview
The Goethe B1 exam has four parts (Modules). You can take all four together or one at a time:

Scoring and passing
To pass the overall exam, you need 60% (60 points) in each module. If you fail one module, you can retake just that module within one year.

Hören (Listening) Tips
This module tests your ability to understand everyday German conversations, announcements, and discussions.
- Part 1: Short everyday conversations listen for specific information
- Part 2: Longer monologues (radio reports, voicemails) true/false questions
- Part 3: Discussion between two people who says what?
- Part 4: Short statements match with correct response
Preparation strategy:
- Listen to Deutsche Welle (DW) "Langsam gesprochene Nachrichten" daily

- Don't panic if you miss a word focus on overall meaning
- Read questions BEFORE the audio plays you get 30 seconds
Lesen (Reading) Tips
You'll read blogs, emails, newspaper articles, and instructions.

- Part 3: Read two opinion texts who says what?
- Part 4: Read comments/reviews match headings
- Part 5: Read instructions/rules true or false
Preparation strategy:
- Read German news daily (DW, Spiegel Online simplified)
- Practice scanning for keywords you don't need to understand every word
- Learn common text types: Anzeigen (ads), Briefe (letters), Regeln (rules)
- Time yourself 65 minutes goes fast with 5 parts
Schreiben (Writing) Tips
The writing section is where many Cameroonians lose points. Focus your preparation here.
- Task 1: Write a personal or semi-formal email (~80 words)
- Task 2: Write a discussion post expressing your opinion (~80 words)
- Task 3: Write a formal email (complaint, request, etc.) (~80 words)
Preparation strategy:
- Memorize Redemittel (set phrases) for each task type:
- "Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren" (formal greeting)
- "Ich schreibe Ihnen, weil..." (I'm writing because...)
- "Meiner Meinung nach..." (In my opinion...)
- "Ich wäre Ihnen dankbar, wenn..." (I would be grateful if...)
- Practice writing one email per day time yourself to 20 minutes
- Focus on structure: greeting, introduction, body, closing, signature
- Common mistakes: mixing du/Sie, wrong article, missing verb at end of Nebensatz
Sprechen (Speaking) Tips
The speaking exam is done with a partner (another test-taker). Two examiners observe.
- Task 1: Plan something together with your partner (e.g., organize a party)
- Task 2: Present a topic to the group (you get a card with points to cover)
- Task 3: Give feedback on your partner's presentation and respond to their questions
Preparation strategy:
- Practice speaking German aloud every day even alone
- Prepare templates for common topics: Reisen, Gesundheit, Technologie, Arbeit, Familie

Exam day tips
- Sleep well the night before your brain needs rest to perform
- Arrive 30 minutes early stress kills performance
- Read instructions carefully many points are lost to misunderstanding what's asked
- Don't leave blanks guess if unsure, especially in multiple choice
- Watch your time use a watch, not your phone
- For writing: Leave 5 minutes to check for article errors and verb position
